LLC As Your Business Structure

May 16th, 2008 by Lori

I was recently talking with a blogger friend who just formed an LLC and has acquired all the legal documents she needs on her path to success.  It got me thinking about it so I investigated.

A limited liability company (abbreviated by L.L.C. or LLC) is a legal form of business company offering limited liability to its owners. It is often called a “limited liability corporation” (instead of company), which is wrong. It is similar to a corporation, and is often more flexible, the owners have limited liability for the actions and debts of the company, it’s especially popular and suitable for smaller companies with a single owner.

As with anything else, there are advantages and disadvantages but from what I can see, it’s a good idea if you are serious about a business.  Whether that be blogging or some other home based business, it’s a way to trademark yourself and manage your business.

Here’s a breakdown so you can compare the different business structures and hopefully, it will help you decide what’s best for you.

Rules and regulations vary by state so it’s important to research and figure out which ones apply to you.  I have some plans in the future and I’m trying to decide if this is for me so it’s open for discussion.

What are your thoughts?  Have you already done this or at the very least, considered it?
