Money vs Morals
I’ve been spending more time over at Amazon Turk, after writing about it here a couple of weeks ago. One thing I noticed was that there seemed to be quite a few “questionable” HITS listed. More than I noticed when I was working with the site a year ago.
For example. One person will pay you a penny to go and vote for his song in a contest. Now I don’t know if he actually wins a prize or if he just rises higher in a list, but still. . . is is fair or right for him to pay for votes? The bigger question is, would you take the money?
Suppose it was a contest where the person with the most votes one a big prize. Would you sell your vote for fifty cents? A dollar? What if he paid $10.00 per vote and you need groceries? Let’s be honest. What amount of money, or under what circumstances would you be willing to sell your vote. It’s not like you’re robbing a bank or anything? Right?
And then there are the jobs that require you to download some kind of toolbar or software in order to complete the mission. Very often, the person posting that job gets a kick back on every download through an affiliate deal (not saying this is always the case, but often.) If the affiliate pays them a $25 bounty for every toolbar downloaded and they offer $1.00 on the Turk to everyone who does. . that’s a heck of a profit. Doing that is totally against the terms of service of most affiliate companies, but do you care? As long as you get paid to the job, does it matter if the person paying you is breaking the rules?
Then there are all of the jobs that pay you to put a positive comment on site, or endorse a product you probably never used. Celebrities do it all the time and they get paid a lot more than fifty cents per HIT!
Of course, none of this is to say that everyone on Amazon Turk is trying to get you to give up your morals for money. I wrote synopsis for movies I HAVE SEEN. I gave my honest opinion on two websites, one good, one bad and I helped a search engine determine if certain photos were pornographic or not.
But when it comes to making money, I’m always amazed at how much time and effort people will spend finding away to go around the rules. What about you? How much money is enough money, to do the wrong thing instead of the right?

This is a topic many people don’t think about when they try to earn something online. How far are we willing to go to do it?
I tend to be pretty strict with myself, and not do anything I wouldn’t do anyway. That tends to limit my possibilities somewhat, but makes me happier.
Of course, I haven’t had anyone offer me a million dollars yet…that one I might have to think about!
